Protecting Peter

Written after Peter's death, John's Gospel was free to name Peter as the swordsman who cut off the ear of the High Priest's servant, Malchus. But Matthew, Mark and Luke hide his identity as the violent assailant at Jesus' arrest. This suggests they were written during Peter's lifetime. After his 42 AD prison escape, Peter is scarcely mentioned in Acts, continuing the pattern of protecting him by keeping knowledge of his whereabouts unpublished.
